The Code on Wages, 2019: Equity and Uniformity

The primary purpose of the Wage Code is to universalize the right to a minimum wage and ensure timely payment across all sectors. By subsuming four major acts (including the Minimum Wages Act and Equal Remuneration Act), it aims to:

Establish a National Floor Wage

To prevent “wage undercutting” by states and ensure a nationally uniform minimum standard of living across the country.

Standardize Remuneration

It introduces a uniform definition of ‘wages,’ reducing long-standing disputes over which salary components attract statutory contributions

Enforce Gender Pay Parity

The code prohibits discrimination in recruitment and wages based on gender (including transgender identity) for similar work.

Ensure Timely Pay-outs

It mandates that wages be paid by the 7th of every month across all industries, providing financial predictability to the workforce.
